Taminas Reflections 2 months agoWe visited Buckingham Fountain and it was such a beautiful and serene experience. Even though the fountain wasn’t running and it was possibly because of the cold weather, the space still had a calm and peaceful atmosphere that made it enjoyable to walk around. There were hardly any people there, which actually made it feel even more relaxing and allowed us to really take in the surroundings. I also spent time walking through the nearby Grant Park, which was just as beautiful, with open green spaces and a peaceful setting. Even without the fountain running, it’s still a lovely place to visit and definitely worth seeing.
Chlochlo 4 months agoThe Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain is truly one of the most beautiful and iconic landmarks in Chicago. Located in the heart of Grant Park along the lakefront, this monumental fountain is often considered the centerpiece of the park and one of the most impressive fountains in the United States. The fountain was dedicated in 1927 and funded by philanthropist Kate Sturges Buckingham in memory of her brother, Clarence Buckingham. At the time of its construction, it was one of the largest decorative fountains in the world. Its design was inspired by the famous Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles in France, which explains the grand scale and classical elegance of the structure. The fountain was designed by architect Edward H. Bennett, one of the key planners involved in the historic Plan of Chicago (1909), a visionary urban design plan that shaped much of Chicago’s lakefront and park system. One fascinating detail many visitors may not notice is the symbolism built into the fountain. The entire structure represents Lake Michigan, and the four large seahorses surrounding the fountain symbolize the four states that border the lake: Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana. The fountain itself is constructed from beautiful pink Georgia marble, which gives it a soft and elegant appearance. Another remarkable aspect is the fountain’s engineering. Beneath the plaza is a large underground pump room that powers the fountain’s dramatic water displays. During the major hourly display in the summer months, the powerful central jet shoots water up to about 150 feet (45 meters) into the air, creating a spectacular view against the Chicago skyline. In the evening, the fountain becomes even more magical when it is illuminated with colorful lights during the choreographed water show. With Lake Michigan on one side and the skyline of downtown Chicago on the other, the setting feels incredibly grand and cinematic. Standing here really shows why Grant Park is often called “Chicago’s front yard.” A truly unforgettable landmark and absolutely worth visiting when exploring Chicago.
