McFerson Commons is a 3-acre urban park built on the former site of the Ohio State Penitentiary (demolished in 1998). It serves as the primary green space connecting the Arena District to the North Bank of the Scioto River. ​McFerson Commons (The "Arch Park"). ​Designer: MKSK (Landscape Architects) led the park's design as part of the Arena District Master Plan. ​The Focal Point: The Union Station Arch (the Daniel Burnham Arch). ​Architect: Daniel Burnham (designed in 1893). ​Materials: Carved gray sandstone. ​History: It is the only surviving piece of Columbus’s Union Station, which was demolished in 1976. The 40-foot-tall arch was moved to the park in 1980 and remains a cornerstone of the district's industrial aesthetic. ​The "Gap" Connection: The park features a historical marker (#33-25) titled "General John Hunt Morgan / Morgan's Escape." It marks the spot of the 1863 tunnel escape by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and six officers from the penitentiary. They tunneled out of an air shaft beneath their cells and scaled the prison walls near this location.

Nice open park in the middle of city area. Was there for a tech fair watching the bands. Great time.

Quiet open green space. It does have park benches around the commons and also the Union Station Arch. I didn't see any restrooms.

One of the best parts of my commute is passing this monument in the arena district. McFerson commons park has this epic train station arch that really showcases the rich history of the city. There are a lot of great restaurants and shops in the area, which makes great for outta town visitors looking for a great evening out. Nationwide Arena home of the Blue Jackets Hockey Team is just a cross the street so there's always something going on around here. So come prepared to have a great time whenever you're in the area
